I LIKE MY HAIR
My braids, I mean.
I don’t like getting my hair done. I hate the tension, carelessness, and doing everything in a rush. Most hairstylists are not great listeners and are horrible with dry natural hair. Although the salon can be a social place, it is somewhat overwhelming. I also get some kind of 'face dysmorphia' with fresh hairstyles (di millennial ruri 😭😭), so I prefer my braids to be about 3 weeks old to enjoy them. Also, with the state of the economy, I am slowly getting priced out of braids. Basically, I don’t like getting my hair braided.
But today, I had a positive experience. I mean, most of the time, it’s really not that bad; it's just blown out of proportion by me hating my hair at the end, which I am actually starting to hate this current hair now, lol (💀).
But, I had a positive experience today. Because Funmi (the hairdresser):
- Listened to me
- Was as gentle as possible
- At my request, didn't use gel except at the front
- Shared her peanuts with me
- Was on time for the appointment
- Because she listened to me, along with her expertise, my hair turned out cute.
So, all is well that ends well.
I find braids heavy and may have cancelled swimming today because of them.
I want to learn how to braid my hair and see if I can bring some magic to this experience.
Side note: The beauty industry?? A cash cow!! I wish women like Funmi were somehow in systems that allowed them to charge more competitively without losing customers (EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE PAID BETTER). But on the other hand, I am glad those women get to leverage beauty and its persistence to make a living.
This brings me to my next point: the economy is not what it was two or three years ago. The beauty complex was so empty (maybe it was me for coming on a quiet Monday), but the cost of renting a chair has probably driven some women away and/or braids are a luxury now. I hope they are coping.
Goodbye, I just wanted to write about this experience!
